Retiree stories

The NHS employs staff from all over the world and 350 different careers. Here we introduce you to just a small number of the people who make the NHS what it is:

  • June Hewett,
Retired paediatric tutor, University Hospital, Bristol
  • Peter Tonks,
Retired administrator, Rubery Hill and John Conolly hospitals, Birmingham
  • Sheila Sheppard,
Retired audit and surveillance nurse, Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton
  • Ethel Armstrong,
Retired superintendent radiographer, Royal Liverpool Hospital

We have also produced two short films with some retired NHS staff sharing their stories of the early days of the NHS. You can find these on the History page.
